In Panama, Mother's Day is celebrated on Dec. 8th. The date was suggested by a wife of Panama's president in the 1930s. It is made to be a national holiday.

Mother's Day is to honor mother's for their hard work. On that day, similar to the rest of the world, the mothers rest while the husband or children do the chores.

We were not prepared for the importance of Mothers Day in Panama. It is not the trivial event of Mothers Day in the US. Here Mothers day is a major national holiday, many people have the day off from work, banks and government offices are shut down and the retailers prepare for the Christmas rush which offically starts today.
