New International Airport triggers development interest

The start of construction of the new international airport in Rio Hato has triggered significant  investor interest in the area.  We will see a surge of new hotel development as direct flights from the US, Canada and Europe bring in hundreds of tourists daily.  Rio Hato is approximately two hours by car from Panama City, and the district is home to many resorts and beach communities. Located in the province of Cocle, Rio Hato is known for it beaches and its car races…it is even known as a good place to skydive. White sand beaches in the district, from Punta Chame to Farallon, are often referred to as the “pearls of the Pacific.” Here you’ll find popular resorts like the Royal Decameron, Playa Blanca, Breezes, and Buenaventura.

Panama is known as the Hub of the Americas, but the only major airport is Tocumen International. Airports in cities like Colon and David offer primarily domestic flights.
An international airport on Panama’s Pacific coast would make it easier for travelers to head straight to the beach without having to go through Panama City. Now, most beach-goers fly into Tocumen International. Late arrivals tend to spend a night in Panama City before getting ground transportation up the Pacific coast. Thus, visitors often “lose” a day they’d rather spend at the beach.
The announcement of the start of the construction of international airport in Rio Hato central provinces has served as foreign investors show greater interest in building hotels and beach resort in the area of ??Farallon, in the province of Cocle.
At the moment, as confirmed by the municipal authorities of Anton, have received at least five proposals to build new hotels.  Parallel to these investments, other beach hotels like Bristol and Mar Azul, located in the area of ??Buenaventura, and presented the plans for further enlargement.
Bernabel Mendoza, city engineer, argues that this type of investment would involve a great economic boost to the municipal treasury in taxes for construction.   During the past two years the construction of facilities dedicated to tourism have increased, said Mendoza.
Business taxes, said Isaiah Reyes, municipal treasurer, would increase considerably following the construction of new hotels. Usually the funds raised in this segment are aimed at social work in community boards in this district

Rainy Season and Dry Season

The rainy season is from late May to early December, while the dry season is from late December to early May -- nearly exactly the same seasonal weather pattern as South Florida, except for the complete absence of hurricanes. The rainy season does not mean continuous rain. Usually mornings are sunny, with intermittent heavy rain in the afternoon. Continuous overcast and drizzle is not the norm except sometimes in the rainiest months of October and November.  Local microclimates vary widely.  Annual rainfall in the city of Panama is about the same as Miami at 8 feet per year. The rainiest areas are in the western mountains on the Caribbean.  Rain is worth big money to Panama because it is what floats the ships through the Panama Canal.  The dry season can be extreme in some areas on the south side of Panama in March and April.

Panama’s seasons are opposite of the US. Winter in Panama is known as summer up north and vice versa.  Winter in Panama refers to the rainy season (May-December) and summer in Panama refers to the dry season (December-May). This means that in the cold months of winter time in the north when many people are seeking relief in warmer climates, Panama is having its summer with the highest temperatures of the year. The school calendar is also reversed, with school 'summer' vacations from mid-December through February.

Why There Are Never Any Hurricanes in Panama?

All hurricanes originating off the coast of Africa are moved by prevailing winds and steering currents westward and northward. A few brush the northern coast and islands of South America along 11 degrees latitude north of the Equator. But Panama is 'tucked away' at 9 degrees latitude below the reach of hurricanes. 

The same holds true of all hurricanes spawning in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.

Here in Panama the news just keeps getting better & better -

The monumental effort of widening the Panama Canal is expected to be completed in 2014.  Once the widening is completed container ships known as Post PanaMax ships will be able to transit the new and improved eighth wonder of the world.  With a subsequent blog post I will provide you with some examples of the amount of new revenue that will come to Panama and (citizens of the USA please make note) the Republic of Panama is creating a Sovereign Fund to collect the additional revenue when the new locks come into operation.  This new Sovereign Fund will help ensure that the budgets are balanced and without deficit (What a Concept!) AND the management of The Sovereign Fund will be totally independent of the government.

Alberto Vallarino, Minister of Economy and Finance, explained that it will function as a stabilization fund, ensuring that budgets are balanced  and without deficit, adding that its management will be totally independent from the government.These types of funds are commonly used in countries with large surpluses of income, such as oil-producing nations and Singapore.An article in Panamaamerica.com.pa states that “Among Latin American countries the model that the government finds most appealing at the moment is Chile’s, which is closely related to Panama,” and also “they are evaluating the structure of the fund Norway is currently employing. ”  So come to Panama and turn your frown upside down.
